The Parachute Regiment’s Red Devils help celebrate the recent wedding of one of their new recruits… by giving a spectacular display to mark the occasion in the skies above St Mary’s Church, Gosforth last weekend.
Corporal Michael French and Claire Winter were marrying the day before Valentines Day, but to make sure the occasion was one that the whole village would remember, six members of his parachute regiment took to the air and gave a freefall display, complete with red smoke and a flag of the Union Jack which was held aloft for all to see.
A huge crowd witnessed the display, and as the display team landed, they all broke out into spontaneous applause and cheers.
Michael French commented on how the display came to be: “I was in the office one day and I mentioned to the lads I’m getting married in February, then asked them if they thought they’d be able to do a display at the wedding. They checked the diary and it was clear so they said they could. It’s been a great day. I’m happy to be married. It was a nice service.”
And if that isn’t an understatement, I don’t know what is!
